Hi!
I just read your free download book, "The True History of Halloween." It was much better than most-- many are mistaken about the history of specific customs. But you were nearly dead-on (pun intended) about why people dress in costumes. The only thing you left out was that people were trying to imitate evil spirits, which why the traditional costumes (even today) are of witches, ghouls, etc.
Also, you did leave out the history of jack-o-lanterns and if you ever decide to revise it, you might add that.
Similar to costumes, Jack-o-lanterns were thought to protect the HOME from evil spirits entering, which is why they are suppoed to have a scary face on them. It was also considered essential to keep these on All Hallow's Eve.
But regarding the distant past, you were very accurate-- even more accurate than the shows on the History Channel, which annoy me because of their inaccuracies.
But, then... I always find it interesting that NO ONE ever seems to make the connection between the fall of the Roman empire and the rise of Catholicism-- basically, the Romans simply changed clothes with a, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality. Like All Saint's Day replacing the Romans' earlier celebration, etc.
Anyway, I enjoyed it very much and will be posting a link to the free download on my site today.
Cheers!
